A DIALOGUE WITH FATHER STANLEY JAKI, O.S.B.
Reverend Stanley L. Jaki, O.S.B., honored
for his lifetime commitment and contributions to the exploration and understanding
of science and religion, is a distinguished University professor and was the
first recipient of the Owen Garrigan Award in Science and Religion.
Born in Gyor, Hungary, Father Jaki completed
his undergraduate training in philosophy, theology and mathematics in 1947.
He was ordained a priest in 1948 and went on to earn a doctorate in systematic
theology from the Instituto Pontificio S. Anselmo in Rome, 1950, the same
year he came to the Unites States. He also earned a Ph.D. in physics from
Fordham University.
Father Jaki was the winner of the 1987 Templeton
Prize, which hailed him for "his immense contribution to bridging the
gap between science and religion, and his making room in the midst of the
most advanced modern science for deep genuine faith."
In 1990, Pope John Paul II named Father Jaki
a member of the Pontifical Academy of the Sciences. The academy, which was
founded nearly 400 hundred years ago, advises the Pope on scientific developments.
Father Jaki has been published in such diverse
publications as the American Journal of Physics, Faith and Reason, Irish Astronomical
Journal and the French Archives De Philosophie. He also has traveled the world
lecturing in prestigious institutions, including Columbia University, Gregorian
University in Rome, University of Paris (Sorbonne), Oxford University in England,
University of Munich in Germany and Medieval Institute in Canada.
Father Jaki has authored countless books in
the area of science and religion, including The Savior of Science,
Miracles and Physics, God and the Cosmologists, The Physicist
as Artist: The Landscape of Pierre Duhem and Genesis I Through the
Ages.
