IDENTITY

The Collegium (formerly known as The Disciples of John Paul II) is an association of colleagues bound together by the Catholic faith, especially as it is expressed by and embodied in the life and teachings of Pope John Paul II.

PURPOSE

To lead young people, 18-35, to an ever deeper encounter with Jesus Christ. This objective is pursued with fresh enthusiasm through an array of educational, spiritual, and cultural initiatives adapted to the particular needs and circumstances of young adults.

ORIGIN

The group was formed by Fr. Tim Byerley, the director of young adult ministry for the Diocese of Camden, and a few of his associates in Lent of 2001. The Collegium currently meets at St. John Vianney Church in Deptford, New Jersey.

FUTURE SITE OF THE COLLEGIUM

Eventually the Collegium will move their operations to the Collegium Center for Faith and Culture at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey. The Collegium Center is directed by Fr. Tim Byerley and governed by a board of trustees, and operates under the authority and with the blessing of the Bishop of Camden.

SCHOLA

One of the distinctive aspects of the young adult apostolate associated with the Collegium is its emphasis on beauty. God is Goodness, Truth, and Beauty Itself, and young adults are therefore drawn to Him through the virtuous example of good men and women, the preaching of the truth, and exposure to the sublime beauty of sacred art. The Schola of the Collegium Center serves to beautify the Divine Liturgy through the performance of various musical treasures of the Western Church, generally a cappella. The Schola also gives occasional concerts featuring larger musical works, the latest being Franz Schubert's Mass in G, and musical performances in other liturgical settings (e.g. Good Friday Tenebrae service, Christmas holy hour).

Young men and women (ages 18-35) interested in singing with the Schola are encouraged to contact director Alexander Marchione at (856)-795-8014 or by email (schola@collegiumcenter.org) in order to schedule a brief audition. Choral experience and a moderate proficiency in sight-singing is required. Weekly rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings 7:00 - 9:00 PM and weekly Mass on Sunday evenings.
